In math we have been working on building numeracy skills. The students have been practicing putting the numbers 0-30 in order, recognizing numbers 0-30, and thinking about the number that comes "before" and the number that comes "after" a number both on a number line and orally. As they have been getting better at these skills we have continued to build on them. We are also working on recognizing the difference between the sounds of numbers (ex. fourTEEN and forTY), and on what numbers mean in relation to 10’s and our hands. We are working on counting to 100, as it is almost 100 Day! We frequently practice saying the numbers 1-20 backwards, counting by 10's, and counting and writing the numbers 1-30. The students are doing quite well with this! They still need some practice on independently writing and recognizing the numbers 20-100. In accordance with this we are working on addition. We have been doing a little bit of it everyday in our "Number of the Day" during calendar time, but they are now working on doing it more independently. The students have become quite good at solving simple, single-digit addition problems using counters.

Good Things to Practice at Home:
  • Orally counting from 1-100 (We need to be ready for 100 Day!! :) )
  • Explain the words "before" and "after" to your child in their Native Tongue and explain how you would use the terms in math (Example: The number that comes before 3 is 2. or The number that comes after 7 is 8.)
  • Ask your child how many of different objects they see in a picture when you are reading to them. (Example: How many rabbits are in the picture?)
  • Have races with your child to see who can say the numbers 20-0 backwards fastest!
  • Practice counting by 5's and 10's to 100
  • Have your child help you do simple addition problems you encounter in your everyday life
